Fungi imperfecti

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some fungi are hard to group. We call them imperfect fungi. This is because we have never seen them use sexual reproduction. Most fungi have a sexual way to make babies. These fungi only use asexual reproduction. This means they make tiny seeds called spores by themselves. This way of making spores is called sporogenesis.

There are about 25,000 known species in this group. Many of these fungi are very useful to people. Some make the medicine called penicillin. Other kinds help make tasty cheeses. For example, they give Roquefort and Camembert their special taste. Some fungi in this group can also cause athlete's foot.

Scientists use a tool called molecular systematics to study them. They look at DNA to see how these fungi are related to others. DNA is a code found in all living things. This helps scientists place them on a tree of life. Some fungi might not have sex because of tiny changes in their genes. These changes can happen very fast in a lab. Scientists are still working to solve the puzzle of these fungi.
