Puffball

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A puffball is a type of fungus. Most look like round balls. They do not have a cap or gills. Instead, they make spores inside. Spores are tiny bits that help them grow. These spores form a mass called a gleba. The gleba sits in the center of the ball.

When the puffball is mature, it is ready. The ball may dry out or split open. If something hits the ball, it bursts. This lets out a cloud of spores.

Some puffballs have a stalk to hold them up. True puffballs do not have a visible stem.

Some puffballs are very big. The giant puffball can grow over 18 inches wide. It can make 7 × 10^7 spores. That is a huge number! People have used puffballs for a long time. In Tibet, people burned them to make ink. In North America, people used the powder on wounds. The spores can help stop bleeding.
