Spirogyra is a type of green algae. People call it water silk or blanket weed. It lives in freshwater like ponds and rivers. You can find it on every continent. It even grows in Antarctica!

This algae gets its name from its chloroplasts. These are the tiny green parts that make food. In Spirogyra, they grow in a spiral shape. The algae can be very thin. It is usually 10 to 150 micrometres wide. It can grow many centimetres long.

Spirogyra has a few ways to make more of itself. It can grow longer through cell division. It can also reproduce in two sexual ways. In scalariform conjugation, two different filaments line up side by side. They grow tubes to join together. In lateral conjugation, the cells join on the same filament.

Scientists are studying how to use this algae. It might help clean up toxic runoff from mines. It could also be used to make biofuel. Some species are even studied for use in medicine because they are full of nutrients.
