Spirogyra is a special kind of green algae found in freshwater. Many people call it water silk or mermaid's tresses. It also has the name blanket weed. This algae lives in many places like rivers and ponds. You can find it on every continent on Earth. It even grows in the cold parts of Antarctica.

This plant gets its name from a unique feature. It has chloroplasts that grow in a spiral shape. Chloroplasts are the parts that help the plant make food. The algae grows in long, thin strands called filaments. These filaments are usually 10 to 150 micrometres wide. Most are not wider than 60 micrometres. They can grow to be several centimetres long.

Spirogyra has a few ways to make more of itself. It can use vegetative reproduction to grow longer. This happens through a thing called intercalary cell division. It can also reproduce sexually in two different ways. In scalariform conjugation, two different filaments line up side by side. They grow tubes that join together to form a canal.

There is another way called lateral conjugation. This happens within a single filament. Two cells next to each other grow tubes that touch. These tubes form a conjugation canal just like the other way. The male cytoplasm then moves through the canal to join the female. A German naturalist named Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link named the genus in 1820. Later, Paul C. Silvia named a specific type in 1952.

Scientists are looking at ways to use this algae today. They are researching its use in bioremediation. This means using living things to clean up the environment. It might help stop toxic runoff from mines or wastewater. People are also looking at it for biofuel. Some species like S. varians are very full of nutrients. This makes them useful for studying new medicines.
