Algae are a huge and diverse group of living things. Most algae live in water, such as oceans or lakes.

They are different from land plants because they lack roots, leaves, or stems. Some algae are tiny single cells called microalgae. These include phytoplankton that float in the water.

Other algae are large, multicellular organisms called macroalgae. These are often known as seaweed. Some types, like kelp, can grow up to 50 meters long.

Many algae work through a process called photosynthesis. This means they use sunlight to make their own food. During this process, they also produce oxygen by splitting water molecules.

Most algae are primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. This means they create the energy that other life needs. Some algae are mixotrophs, which means they get energy from both sunlight and outside nutrients. A few types are even parasites that rely entirely on other energy sources.

Today, we use algae for many modern jobs called algaculture. We use them as cattle feed and to help clean up pollution. Scientists even turn sunlight into algae fuels. Algae are also used in medical and scientific research.

People have been naming and sorting algae for centuries. In 1753, a scientist named Linnaeus recognized 14 groups of algae. Later, in 1768, Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin published a book just about marine algae.

He used beautiful drawings to show different seaweeds. In the 1800s, W. H. Harvey and Lamouroux divided algae into four groups. They used color to sort them into red, brown, green, and diatoms.

They come in many shapes, like long strings called filaments. Some algae grow in thick, carpet-like beds called turfs. These turfs are usually less than 15 centimeters tall.

Even though they look different, they all play a big part in our world. They help keep our waters healthy and full of life.
