Glaucophytes are a small group of tiny, single-celled algae.

They live in fresh water or in moist soil. These organisms belong to a large group called Archaeplastida. This group also includes red algae and green plants. Scientists believe glaucophytes might be the most ancient members of this group. They are very interesting to biologists who study how life evolved. Studying them helps us understand how early cells changed over time.

These algae have special parts for catching sunlight. These parts are called cyanelles, or sometimes muroplasts.

Unlike the parts in green plants, cyanelles have a peptidoglycan layer. This layer is a leftover from their ancient ancestors. These ancestors were likely cyanobacteria. The cyanelles also use phycobilisomes to gather light. These are structures made mostly of phycobiliproteins. They help the algae find light in dark water. They use a pigment called chlorophyll a to do this.

Glaucophytes do not have sexual reproduction. Instead, they only use asexual reproduction to make more cells. One way they do this is through binary fission. In this way, a cell divides into two new parts. The genus Cyanophora divides in a long way to make two daughter cells. Each new cell gets one cyanelle. Other species, like Glaucocystis, make spores called autospores. These spores do not move around. This is different from red or green algae.

Finding these algae in the wild is not very common today. They were much more common during the Proterozoic era.

Scientists count between 14 and 26 different species. Some lists divide them into three families and five genera. One genus is Cyanophora, which has five or six species. Another genus is Glaucocystis, which has seven or eight species. There is also a genus called Cyanoptyche. It only has one single species.

You can think of glaucophytes as living history books. They show us how very old life forms worked. Just as a fossil shows an old animal, these algae show old cell parts. They share traits with both red algae and green plants. For example, they store carbon in their main body area. This is a trait they share with red algae. They also have flagella, which are tiny tails used for moving. These tails are similar to those found in some green algae.
