Glaucophytes are a small group of tiny algae.

They live in fresh water and wet soil. Scientists think there are between 14 and 26 species. These algae belong to a large group called Archaeplastida. This group also includes red algae and green plants.

Glaucophytes have special parts to catch light. We call these parts cyanelles. These parts are unique because they have a thin layer of peptidoglycan. This layer is a leftover from their ancient ancestors. Glaucophytes also use phycobilisomes. These are structures that help them harvest light. This helps them live in dark water. They use a pigment called chlorophyll a to do this.

These algae do not have sexual reproduction. Instead, they use asexual reproduction. This means they make more of themselves without a partner. One way is called binary fission. In this way, one cell divides into two. One type of algae is called Cyanophora. It may have only one or two cyanelles. Some species also make spores to grow.
