Chlorophyta

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chlorophyta is a large group of green algae. These living things are very important to our planet. They help fix more than a billion tons of carbon every year. Most of these algae live in fresh water. In fact, about 90% of all known species live there. Some species live in the salty ocean as seaweed. Others live in very tough places like deserts or even on snow.

Inside their cells, these algae have green parts called chloroplasts. These chloroplasts have a double-membrane envelope around them. They contain chlorophylls a and b to help the algae use sunlight. They also store starch inside to keep as food reserves. Some algae use special colors called carotenoids to help them. These colors help when there is too much sunlight or not enough nitrogen. These same colors can also be found in the leaves of land plants.

Many chlorophytes can move using tiny tails called flagella. These tails often come in two or four equal lengths. The way these tails connect to the cell is very special. They use a unique X-2-X-2 arrangement of tiny structures. This arrangement is something you will only find in chlorophytes. Some algae are just one single cell. Others grow into complex colonies or even multicellular shapes.

Scientists have studied these algae for a long time. A German botanist named Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach first mentioned them in 1828. Later, a botanist named Adolf Pascher changed the name in 1914. He wanted the name to only include green algae. He defined them by the chlorophyll they have and the starch they store. In 2004, scientists used new tools to set the modern name. They used molecular phylogenetics to separate them from other groups.

Chlorophytes connect to many parts of our world. Some species live in a partnership called symbiosis. For example, they can live with fungi to form lichens. Some algae are even used as food by people. One type is called Monostroma kuroshiense. This seaweed is very expensive and grown all over the world. Other types can even cause a disease called protothecosis in humans.
