Haptophytes are a special group of tiny algae living in the water.

These living things are very important to the ocean. Some of them can even make their own minerals. Most of these algae have a brownish-yellow color. This color comes from a part called fucoxanthin. They also have two smooth tails to help them move.

These tiny cells have a very interesting way they work. They use two smooth flagella, which are like little tails, to swim. They also have a unique part called a haptonema. The name comes from Greek words meaning "touch thread." This part looks like a tail but it is used differently. Inside the cell, they store energy in a way called chrysolaminarin. This is a type of sugar kept in small bubbles.

Scientists have spent a long time studying how to group these algae. At first, they were placed in a group called Chrysophyceae. Later, researchers used new data to show they are separate. Many different scientists have helped name the different groups. For example, Hibberd used the name Haptophyta in 1976. Cavalier-Smith also helped by naming several groups in 1986 and 2015.

There are many different kinds of haptophytes to know. The most famous are called coccolithophores. There are 673 of these species out of 762 total haptophyte species. These coccolithophores make hard plates called coccoliths to form a shell. They are very common in the open ocean. Some other types include Chrysochromulina and Prymnesium. These can sometimes cause toxic blooms in the sea.

We can see how these algae connect to our world in many ways. Some haptophytes, like Phaeocystis, can make foam on the beach. Other species are very useful for people in the aquaculture industry. This is the business of raising sea life. Farmers use species like Pavlova lutheri to feed baby shrimp and oysters. These algae are full of healthy fats like DHA. These fats help the small animals grow strong.
