Most haptophytes have a brownish-yellow color. This color comes from a part called fucoxanthin. They also have two smooth tails to help them move. These cells have a special part called a haptonema. The name means "touch thread." This part is like a tail but works differently.

Many haptophytes are called coccolithophores. They make hard plates called coccoliths. These plates form a shell around the cell. There are 673 known species of these coccolithophores. They live in the open ocean. When they die, they leave behind chalk on the sea floor.

Some haptophytes can cause blooms. A bloom is when many algae grow at once. Some blooms make toxic water. Others make foam on the beach. These plants are also great for food. People use them in fish farms. They feed baby shrimp and oysters. They have healthy fats that help these animals grow.
