Chlorophyta is a group of green algae. Most of these algae live in fresh water. About 90% of all known species live there. Some live in the salty ocean. You might see them as seaweed on rocks.

These algae have special green parts called chloroplasts. These parts help them use sunlight. They also store starch inside to save food. Some algae are just one tiny cell. Others grow in large groups or colonies. Some even grow into long, branch-like shapes.

Many green algae can swim. They use tiny tails called flagella to move. These tails can come in pairs or groups of four. Some algae can even live in tough places. They live on snow or on trees. Some live in hot deserts or deep oceans.

Green algae are very important to Earth. They help fix more than a billion tons of carbon every year. Some algae live with other living things. For example, some form lichens with fungi. Others are even eaten by people. One type is a very expensive seaweed used in food.
