Porphyra

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Porphyra is a group of red seaweeds. These plants grow in cold and shallow seawater. Most of them live in the intertidal zone. This is the area between the high tide and the splash zone.

There are about 70 species of Porphyra in the world. Some people call these sea vegetables laver. They are very important to many different cultures. Many people around the world use them as food.

This seaweed has a very interesting way it grows. It goes through a thing called a heteromorphic alternation of generations. This means it changes its shape during its life cycle. First, the seaweed we see can make spores. These spores grow into more of the same seaweed. It can also reproduce sexually.

Male and female parts form on the same plant. The male parts are released into the water. They join with the female parts to make new spores. These spores settle into shells and grow into thin threads.

Scientists have studied these seaweeds for a long time. A British scientist named Kathleen Mary Drew-Baker made a big discovery. In 1949, she studied a species called Porphyra umbilicalis. She found that the thin, thread-like stage was actually part of the seaweed. Before her work, people thought it was a different kind of alga. This stage was once called Conchocelis rosea.

Different parts of the world use Porphyra in unique ways. In Japan, it is called nori or amanori. The annual production in Japan is worth 100 billion yen. In Korea, people call it gim. They use it to wrap rice and fish for gimbap.

In Great Britain and Ireland, it is used for laverbread. In Hawaii, this seaweed is a special treat called limu. It is also a source of vitamin B12.

This seaweed is very useful for people to eat. It is one of the most domesticated marine algae. This means humans have grown it for a long time. Many people use it to make sushi. In East Asia, it is a main part of the diet.

It is a great example of how sea plants help humans. You can find it in many different types of meals. It connects the ocean to our dinner plates.
