These algae are made of just one cell. This cell can move around. It uses two long tails called flagella.

These tails help the cell swim. If one tail breaks, the cell can fix it. It uses parts from the other tail to rebuild it.

The cell has a green part called a chloroplast. This part is often shaped like a cup. Inside the chloroplast, the cell makes starch for food. The cell also has a red eye spot. This spot helps the cell sense light. This is important because most kinds need light to live. Some kinds can grow in the dark if they have acetate. Acetate is a type of food. Scientists study these algae to learn about how cells work.
