Usnea is a type of lichen. People often call it old man's beard.

It grows on trees and rocks in many parts of the world. These lichens look like tiny shrubs or long tassels.

They can be pale green, yellow, or even red.

One way to know if it is Usnea is to touch it. The branches are elastic, which means they stretch. This happens because a central cord runs through the middle.

Other lichens might snap if you pull them. Usnea also has soralia. These are small parts that make new bits of lichen to help it grow.

Usnea is very important for nature. Birds use it to build their nests. It also helps us study the air. Usnea only grows well in clean air. If the air is dirty, it will not thrive. Scientists use these lichens as bioindicators. This is a way to measure if the air is healthy.
