Lobaria pulmonaria is a large lichen. It looks like a green leaf.

People call it tree lungwort. This is because its shape looks like lung tissue. It grows on rocks or the bark of trees. It likes damp places with lots of rain.

This lichen is special because three different living things live together. It has a fungus and a green alga. It also has a cyanobacterium. These are tiny blue-green organisms. The cyanobacteria live in small dark spots called cephalodia. These spots help the lichen by fixing nitrogen from the air. Nitrogen is a nutrient that helps it grow.

The lichen can make new parts to grow. It makes tiny grains called soredia. These grains can crumble off in the wind or rain. They then grow into new lichens. The lichen can also make reddish-brown discs. These discs release spores into the air.

This lichen needs clean air to stay healthy. Air pollution and acid rain can hurt it. Because of this, it is rare in many places. You can often find it in old forests.
