Lobaria pulmonaria is a large, leaf-like lichen. It is often called tree lungwort or oak lungwort. This name comes from its shape. The lichen looks like the tissue found inside lungs.

It grows as an epiphyte. This means it grows on the surface of other things like tree bark. You can find it on oak, beech, or maple trees. It can also grow on rocks. This lichen is very important for scientists. It can show if a forest is very old. It also shows if the air is clean.

This lichen works through a special partnership. It is a symbiosis involving three different living things. It has a fungus and a green alga called Dictyochloropsis reticulata. It also has a cyanobacterium called Nostoc. The cyanobacteria live in tiny dark pockets called cephalodia. These pockets are found on the lower surface. The cyanobacteria do a hard job called nitrogen fixation. They take nitrogen from the air and turn it into food. This provides a nutrient for the whole lichen. The green alga also helps by making food from sunlight.

People have used this lichen for a very long time. In 1597, a book called The Herball recommended it for medicine. Many cultures have used it for different things. In India, it is used for eczema. In British Columbia, Canada, the Hesquiaht use it for coughing. In Italy, people have used it as an antiseptic for wounds. It has also been used to make orange dye for wool. People even used it to make perfumes and for brewing. Scientists today are studying its extracts to learn more about its medicinal properties.

There are many facts about how this lichen grows and lives. The leaf-like part is called a thallus. It can have lobes that are up to 7 cm long. The lichen can be about 25 years old before it reproduces. It can make new parts in two ways. It can use tiny grains called soredia or isidia. These pieces crumble off and blow in the wind. It can also make reddish-brown discs called apothecia. These discs shoot spores into the air.

This lichen is very sensitive to the world around it. It likes damp places with high rainfall. It can be found in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. However, it is becoming rare in many lowland areas of Europe. Air pollution is a big problem for it. Acid rain is especially bad. Acid rain makes the environment more acidic. This stops the cyanobacteria from fixing nitrogen. This makes it hard for the lichen to stay healthy. Habitat loss and changes in how we manage forests also hurt its population.
