life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Oakmoss is a type of lichen. A lichen is a living thing that grows on bark. You can find it in many forests. It grows on oak trees most of the time. It also grows on pine and fir trees.

This lichen has a very special shape. It has many branches. These branches look like small antlers. The parts are flat and strap-like. They grow in bushy clumps. The color changes based on water. It is green or white when dry. It turns dark green or yellow when wet.

Oakmoss has a strong smell. It can smell woody, sharp, or sweet. People use it to make perfume. It helps scents last a long time. This is called a fixative. Many perfumes use oakmoss as a base.

Scientists also use oakmoss to study the air. They look for heavy metals in the lichen. This helps them check for pollution in cities. In Iceland, this lichen is in big trouble. It is listed as critically endangered there. This means it is very rare to find.
