This lichen grows on the bark of trees. It likes pine, fir, and spruce trees. It prefers trees with poor food in their bark.

Tree moss can tell us about the air. It is very sensitive to air pollution. If you see it, the air is likely clean. It can even help us track metals in the air. It can also track radiation from nuclear accidents.

People use tree moss in many ways. In 1997, France processed 1900 tons of it for perfume. In ancient Egypt, people used it for mummies. They may have used it for its smell or to keep bodies safe.

It is also used for medicine. In Spain, people boil it to make a drink. This drink helps with breathing problems. Scientists also study how it can soak up heavy metals from liquids. This might help clean up waste in the future. In Iceland, this lichen is very rare. It is called critically endangered there.
