Morels are a special group of fungi known as Morchella.

These mushrooms are very famous among gourmet cooks. People in places like France and Catalonia love to use them in meals. They grow in many parts of the world. You can find them in North America and Turkey. They also grow in China, India, and Pakistan. They are even found in the Himalayas. Because they are hard to grow in farms, people must find them in the wild. This makes harvesting them a huge multimillion-dollar industry.

Morels have a very distinct look that helps people find them. Their caps are covered in a network of ridges and pits. This pattern makes them look just like a honeycomb. They come in many different colors. You might see them in white, grey, black, brown, or yellow.

When you slice a true morel lengthwise, the inside is always hollow. This is a very important fact to remember. It helps people tell them apart from other mushrooms. You must always be sure of what you found before eating them. Eating them raw or undercooked can be toxic.

Many other mushrooms can look like morels, which is a big challenge. These are often called "false morels." One common type is called Gyromitra.

Instead of a honeycomb pattern, Gyromitra caps look wrinkled like a brain. They are often reddish-brown or dark brown. Another group called Verpa is also highly poisonous. You can tell Verpa apart by slicing them open. They have a cottony substance inside their stems. Also, their caps only touch the stem at the very top. True morels attach to the stem near the bottom of the cap.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these fungi. This study is called taxonomy, which is the way we name and group living things. In 1794, a man named Christiaan Hendrik Persoon named the genus. He used Morchella esculenta as the main type for the group. For a long time, experts disagreed on how many species existed. Some thought there were only three species. Others thought there were 34 different kinds. In 2014, a researcher named Richard helped clear up many of these confusing names.

Today, we use new tools to learn even more. We use molecular phylogenetics, which is studying the family trees of living things using DNA. This science shows that morels are even more diverse than we thought. While old books listed fewer, DNA suggests there may be over seventy species worldwide. Many of these species live in only one specific area. Scientists are still finding new ones in places like Australia, Canada, and Cyprus. It is amazing how much we are still discovering about these tiny, honeycomb-capped wonders.
