Abalone are fascinating sea snails found in oceans all over the world.

They belong to a group called Haliotidae. Most of these snails prefer to live in cold waters. You might find them near New Zealand, South Africa, or Japan. Many people call them "ear shells" because of their shape. Their shells look like a large, flattened ear.

This unique shape makes them very easy to recognize in the sea.

An abalone shell works in a very special way to help the snail live. The shell has a row of holes called a selenizone. These holes are used for breathing by venting water from the gills. They also help the snail release eggs and sperm into the water. As the snail grows, it creates new holes near the edge. The older holes eventually get sealed up by the growing shell. Most species keep between four and ten holes open at one time.

Humans have used abalone for a very long time.

People have harvested them for food and art since prehistory. Archaeologists found shells in places like Blombos Cave in South Africa. These shells are 100,000 years old. In California, shells were found at historic Chinese abalone middens. For at least 12,000 years, people harvested them near the Channel Islands. This long history shows how much humans value these creatures.

There are many interesting facts about how abalone look and grow.

Most species are quite small, but the largest is Haliotis rufescens. This huge species can reach 36 inches in length. The inside of the shell is lined with nacre, which is a shiny layer. This nacre can look pink, green, blue, or even purple. The shell is also very strong because it is made of calcium carbonate. Scientists even study this structure to help design better body armor.

Today, abalone are part of many different human activities.

Because wild populations have decreased, many people now farm them. Farming began in Japan and China during the late 1950s and 1960s. In Australia, a "sea ranch" was started in 2012 in Flinders Bay. This ranch uses 5,000 concrete units to create a home for them. Many people also enjoy eating abalone as a special meal. In China, it is often served at big celebrations.
