The round side of the shell is called the dorsal face. The flat underside is called the ventral face. This bottom side has a long, narrow opening called an aperture. This opening often has small teeth along the edges. The narrow end of the shell is the anterior end. The wider end is called the posterior.

People have used cowries as money for thousands of years. In China, shells or copies of shells were used as currency starting more than 3,000 years ago. The Chinese character for money actually started as a drawing of a Maldivian cowrie shell.

In Africa, the shell was used as money for many centuries. Some people in British West Africa used them to pay taxes. Even the name of the cedi, the money in Ghana, comes from the cowrie.

Cowries are found in many different parts of the world. They are very common in the Indian Ocean. You can find them near the Maldive Islands and the coast of Africa. Some species live in the Pacific near Papua New Guinea. In the United States, they live in waters near California and Mexico. The chestnut cowrie is the only kind native to the eastern Pacific near the U.S.

Today, we still see cowries used in many interesting ways. Some people wear them as beautiful jewelry or charms. In the Fiji Islands, chieftains once wore a golden cowrie to show their rank.
