People have used these shells for a very long time. For centuries, many people used them as money. In China, they were used as currency for over 3,000 years. In Africa, they were used to pay taxes. The name for the money in Ghana comes from the shell.

Cowries are also used for other things. Some people wear them as pretty jewelry. In Fiji, leaders wore them to show their rank. People also use them in games. They can act like dice in board games. In some places, they are used in special ceremonies. They are even used to help teach children math.
