Cone snails are fascinating and dangerous hunters found in warm seas. These sea snails belong to a group called Conidae.

They live mostly in tropical waters around the world. You can find them in the Indo-Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Pacific oceans. Some live in the warm waters near South Africa too. Most species love sandy areas, rocks, or coral reefs. They are very important to study because they are highly venomous.

These snails have a very clever way of hunting. They use a special tooth called a radula to catch food. This tooth is shaped like a tiny, barbed harpoon.

First, the snail senses prey with a special sense organ. Then, it extends a long, flexible tube called a proboscis. The snail uses a strong muscle to fire the tooth through the tube. This action can be incredibly fast. One species, Conus catus, has a strike that is one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. The hollow tooth carries venom from a gland into the prey. This stops the prey from moving so the snail can eat it.

Scientists have been studying these snails for a long time. A famous scientist named Carl Linnaeus worked with them in the 1700s. Back then, he only knew about 30 different species. Today, we know there are over 800 recognized species.

Some shells are very small, only 1.3 cm long. Other shells can grow as large as 21.6 cm. We even have fossils that are 55 million years old. These fossils come from a time called the Eocene epoch. This shows that cone snails have been around for a very long time.

There are many interesting facts about their shells and venom. Cone shells are shaped like inverted cones and have many colors. These patterns can make it hard for scientists to name them. As of 2009, there were over 3,200 different names given to species. The venom is made of many parts called conopeptides. There are likely 50,000 different types of these peptides in total. Some snails are so fast that they are called "cigarette snails." This name comes from a story that a person only has time to smoke one cigarette after being stung.

Even though they can be dangerous, cone snails are very helpful to humans. Their venom is being used to create new medicines. For example, a part of the venom from Conus magus is used as a medicine called ziconotide. This medicine helps people who have very severe, chronic pain. Scientists are also looking at the venom to help with other hard jobs. It might help treat brain injuries or help people with spinal cord injuries. By studying these small hunters, we might find many ways to help people feel better.
