Charonia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Charonia are very large sea snails. People often call them Triton's trumpet. This name comes from a Greek god named Triton. He was the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Stories show Triton blowing a large seashell horn. These snails are very important to the ocean. They are one of the few hunters that eat the crown-of-thorns starfish.

These snails have a special way of hunting. First, they smell their prey in the water. They then turn and chase the animal. The snail uses a muscular foot to grip the prey. It uses a radula to eat. A radula is a toothy organ used for scraping. The snail also has a paralyzing saliva. This saliva subdues the prey so the snail can eat at its own pace.

We have known about these snails for a very long time. Fossil records show this genus lived during the Cretaceous period. Scientists find these fossils in marine layers all over the world. One fossil found in Italy is called Charonia appenninica. It comes from the Pliocene period. These old shells help us learn about the history of life in the sea.

There are different types of Charonia snails. The giant triton is named Charonia tritonis. Linnaeus named this species in 1758. It lives in the Indo-Pacific and can grow over 0.5 meters long. Another species is Charonia variegata. Lamarck named it in 1816. It lives in the western Atlantic from North Carolina to Brazil. These snails live in both warm and cool waters.

These snails help keep the coral reefs healthy. The crown-of-thorns starfish can destroy large parts of a reef. This starfish can grow up to 1 meter wide. It is covered in venomous spikes that are an inch long. Because tritons eat these starfish, they help protect the coral. Without these snails, the starfish might grow too much. It is a very important balance in the ocean.
