Scientists call them asteroids because they belong to a group named Asteroidea. These marine invertebrates live on the seabed in many places. They can be found in warm tropical waters or very cold polar regions. Some live near the shore, while others live in the deep, dark parts of the ocean. There are about 1,900 different species of starfish in the world today.

Most starfish have a central disc and five arms. However, the number of arms can change depending on the species. Some have six or seven arms, while others have 10 to 15. One kind called Antarctic Labidiaster annulatus can even have over fifty arms!

To move, they use a water vascular system. This is a hydraulic system made of fluid-filled canals. Water enters through a small hole called a madreporite. It then travels through canals to reach many tiny tube feet. These feet use special chemicals to grip onto surfaces so the starfish can crawl.

Starfish have been around for a very long time. The fossil record shows they lived during the Ordovician period. This was about 450 million years ago!

It is hard for scientists to find many old starfish fossils. This is because starfish tend to fall apart after they die. Usually, only their hard spines or tiny bone-like pieces called ossicles are left behind. These ossicles are made of calcium carbonate and form a skeleton under their skin.

These animals play important roles in the ocean. Some starfish, like the ochre sea star, are keystone species. This means they have a huge impact on their environment.

Other starfish are very hungry predators. The crown-of-thorns starfish eats a lot of coral in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Northern Pacific seastar is even listed as one of the worst invasive species. This happens when a species moves to a new place and causes problems for the local life.

Many people find starfish very interesting to look at. They have beautiful shapes that look like stars. Because of this, they are often used in art or as logos. Some cultures even eat them.
