The sunflower sea star is a huge animal in the Pacific Ocean.

It is one of the largest sea stars in the world. It is also the heaviest sea star we know. An adult can weigh about 5 kg. These stars have many arms. Most adults have between 16 and 24 limbs. They can be orange, yellow, red, brown, or purple. Their bodies feel soft and like velvet.

They live in deep water near seaweed and rocks.

These sea stars are very good hunters. They move using 15,000 tube feet. These tiny feet are on their undersides. They eat many things like sea urchins and clams. They also eat snails and sea cucumbers. Sometimes they even eat other sea stars. To eat big prey, they can push their stomach outside their mouth. This helps them digest food like abalone. If a predator like a king crab attacks, they can drop an arm to escape. The arm will grow back in a few weeks.

Finding these stars in the wild has become much harder. Scientists looked at the ocean from 2004 to 2017. They found that the amount of sea stars dropped by 80 to 100 percent. In Washington, the population fell by 99.2 percent. Between 2013 and 2015, the numbers fell very fast. This happened because of warmer water and a sickness. The sickness is called sea star wasting disease. It is caused by a bacterium named Vibrio pectenicida.

This disease makes their limbs fall off.

Many groups are working to save these animals now. In 2020, the IUCN named them critically endangered. This means they are at high risk of dying out. The Nature Conservancy and the University of Washington are helping. They are trying captive breeding to grow more stars in labs. This includes studying how the young larvae grow. In 2021, a group called the Center for Biological Diversity asked for more protection. In 2023, the National Marine Fisheries Service proposed a plan to protect them. They want to list them as threatened.

Sunflower sea stars play a big role in the ocean. They are a main predator for sea urchins. This helps keep kelp forests healthy and strong. Without the sea stars, urchin populations grow too large. Too many urchins can eat all the kelp in an area. This changes the whole home for other sea life. Protecting the sea star helps protect the whole forest.
