Echinoderm

Echinoderms are a huge group of amazing sea animals.

This group includes starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. There are about 7,600 living species in the oceans today. You can find them on the sea floor at every depth. Some live in shallow water near the shore. Others live in the very deep, dark abyssal zone. They are very important for the health of the ocean.

Most adult echinoderms have a special shape called radial symmetry. This means they have five parts arranged around a center.

Their babies look very different from the adults. The larvae have a left and right side. During a change called metamorphosis, the left side grows much more. The right side is eventually absorbed into the body. This is how they develop their five-part star shape. Some special species even have many more arms than five.

These animals use a unique water vascular system to live.

This is a network of fluid-filled tubes inside their bodies. Water enters through a small opening called a madreporite. The fluid travels through canals to reach tiny tube feet.

By moving fluid into these feet, the animal can walk or grab food. This system also helps them breathe and sense their world. It is a clever way to use water for many jobs.

Scientists have studied these animals for a very long time.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, researchers used them to study regeneration. This is the way they grow back lost limbs or organs. Some can even grow a whole new body from one arm. The name for the group was first used by Jacob Theodor Klein in 1734. Later, Jean Guillaume Bruguière expanded the name in 1791. This helped scientists organize all the different species.

Echinoderms also have a hard skeleton made of calcite plates. These plates are called ossicles.

Some ossicles are joined together to make a strong shell. Others act like joints to make flexible arms. These hard parts often turn into fossils in limestone rocks. This helps experts learn about the Earth's past. Many echinoderms also have bright colors like purple or red. These colors can even change when the light changes at night.
