Sea urchins are amazing living things that live on the ocean floor.

They belong to a group called echinoderms. This group also includes starfish and sea cucumbers. There are about 950 different species of urchins in our oceans. You can find them in every ocean and every climate. They live from warm tropical waters to the freezing polar regions. Some live in shallow areas where the tide moves. Others live in the very deep sea.

Most urchins have a round body protected by a hard shell. This shell is called a test. The test is made of plates of calcium carbonate.

These plates grow as the animal gets bigger. To move, urchins use hundreds of tiny, clear tube feet. These feet work using a water vascular system. This system uses water pressure to pump the feet in and out.

Urchins also use their many spines to push themselves along the seabed. They can even use spines to roll themselves upright if they flip over.

Scientists have studied sea urchins for a long time. People have looked at them since the 1800s. Researchers like them because their tiny babies are easy to watch. This helps scientists learn about how life grows. The fossil record shows that urchins have been around for a very long time. Some fossils date back to the Ordovician period.

Sea urchins have a very special way of eating.

Most urchins have a chewing tool called Aristotle's lantern. This name comes from a famous thinker named Aristotle. It is made of five strong, arrow-shaped plates. These plates act like teeth to scrape and tear food. Most urchins eat algae from the rocks. Some also eat slow animals like sponges or crinoids.

If there are too many urchins, they can eat all the algae. This can leave a place looking empty, which is called an urchin barren.

Urchins come in many different shapes. Regular urchins are round like a ball. They have five-fold symmetry, which means they have five equal parts.

This symmetry is easy to see on their shells. However, some urchins are not round. They are called irregular urchins. This group includes flat sand dollars and heart urchins.

Their flat shape helps them burrow through soft sand. They are very different from the round ones, but they are still part of the same family.
