These creatures are actually a type of sea cucumber. Scientists call them members of the genus Pseudocolochirus. They have round, egg-shaped bodies that can grow quite long. Many people find them interesting because of their bright colors.

An Australian species has a purple body and red feet. It also has purple and white tentacles. These animals are part of a larger group called holothuroids. They are fascinating living things to observe in the ocean.

Sea apples have a special way they find food. They are filter feeders that eat tiny plankton.

The sea apple uses feathery tentacles to catch food from the water. It brings each tentacle to a central mouth-like cavity. This action scrapes the captured plankton into its mouth. Most sea apples choose to feed at night. This helps keep their delicate tentacles safe from predators. They also use rows of tube feet to move and stick to things.

These animals have several ways to defend themselves. If they feel stressed, they can use a process called evisceration. This is when they push their internal organs out of their bodies.

They can also release a toxin called holothurin. This chemical goes into the water to protect them. If the environment is not good, they can drink seawater. This makes them swell to nearly double their original size. Swelling helps water currents carry them to a new area quickly.

Many people want to keep sea apples in marine aquariums. They are often called reef safe because they live well with other species. However, keeping them in tanks can be a very hard job. Sea apples often starve in display aquariums. This happens because there is not enough plankton in the water. They may try to feed during the day to find more. When they do not find enough food, they become smaller. Some people try to help by giving them extra liquid food.

Other animals in an aquarium can also cause problems. Fish and crustaceans, like hermit crabs, might peck at the tentacles. They might do this to eat or just to steal plankton.

This harassment can make the sea apple use its defenses. If the sea apple releases its toxin, it can poison other fish. This is one reason why they are not seen in many aquariums. It is important to understand how they live in the wild. They rely on the natural balance of the Indo-Pacific oceans.
