Linckia laevigata

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The blue Linckia is a special kind of sea star. You might see it in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific. These animals live in coral reefs and sea grass beds. They like to stay in shallow water near the shore. Some live just below the waves. Others live where the tide comes in and out. They are quite common in the ocean.

These sea stars come in many different colors. Most people see them as pure blue or dark blue. You might also find light blue, aqua, or purple ones. Some are even orange. Their arms are long and look like tubes. The tips of the arms are rounded. Some stars have spots on their arms. They use small, yellow tube feet to move. They move slowly at about 8.1 centimeters per minute.

Nature has given this sea star amazing powers. It can use autotomy to stay safe from predators. This is when the star drops an arm to escape. The star can also use regeneration to grow that arm back. Some scientists think they can reproduce asexually. This means one star could make a new one. They might make "comets," which are separate arms. These tiny arms grow into full stars.

Many creatures in the reef try to eat the blue Linckia. Pufferfish and harlequin shrimp are known to eat them. Even some sea anemones will eat parts of the star. A tiny snail called Thyca crystallina can also live on them as a parasite. However, some animals help the star instead. Periclimenes shrimp live on the star's surface. They pick up tiny bits of waste and mucus.

People often keep these stars in home aquariums. They are called detritivores because they eat organic waste. They also graze on algae and sponges. In tanks, they might even eat Asterina starfish. This was seen in a photo on Reddit from 2021. People also collect their dried skeletons for decoration. This is called the sea-shell trade. Because of this trade, populations are lower in some areas.
