Culcita (echinoderm)

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Culcita are a special group of sea stars. They live in warm, tropical waters. You can find them on coral reefs. Some people even keep them in home aquariums. These stars are very unique. They look plump and shaped like pillows.

These sea stars have a funny shape. They are mostly shaped like a five-sided star. Their five arms are not long or pointy. Instead, the arms have blunt angles. Some arms look rounded or even cut off. They can grow up to 30 cm wide. They eat coral and small animals on the sea floor.

Scientists have named three different species in this group. Müller and Troschel named two of them in 1842. One is called Culcita novaeguineae. The other is called Culcita coriacea. A third type was named by Retzius in 1805. This one is called Culcita schmideliana. Each species lives in its own special place.

Each species lives in a different part of the world. Culcita schmideliana lives in the Indian Ocean. This area goes from Africa to the Maldives. Culcita novaeguineae lives in Oceania and the Pacific Ocean. This includes the Indonesian region. The third species, Culcita coriacea, lives in the Red Sea. It also lives around Arabia.

It can be hard to tell these stars apart. Culcita schmideliana has large tubercles. Tubercles are small bumps on the skin. These bumps are usually not on the papular areas. Both species can also be naked without bumps. Young Culcita stars look very different. They are flat and pentagonal. They look like small biscuit sea stars.
