Platax are a special group of fish. Many people call them batfish.

They belong to a family called Ephippidae. These fish are very important to ocean reefs. They love to live in salty water. This salt helps them grow and stay healthy.

These fish have a very unique shape. Their bodies are thin and pressed flat. This is why their name comes from a Greek word meaning "flat."

Adults look like a round disc. They have large fins on the top and bottom. These fins make the fish look like a triangle. The longfin batfish is the largest of all these species.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. A man named Cuvier first used the name Platax in 1816. He used it to name the species Platax boersii. He also named another fish called Platax ocellatus. Later, scientists found that the ocellatus was actually a butterflyfish. In 1831, Cuvier and Valenciennes even misnamed a freshwater angelfish as a Platax.

You can also find the orbicular batfish and the dusky batfish. The longfin batfish is the fifth one. Scientists also found four fossil species from a long time ago. These include Platax altissimus and Platax macropterygious.

They like to hide near coral reefs or shipwrecks. Some live in the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. Others live on the eastern coast of Australia. One species, the orbicular batfish, was even seen in Florida.

This happened because of the aquarium industry.
