Eagle rays are a special group of fish. They belong to the family Myliobatidae. These fish are cartilaginous. This means their bodies use cartilage instead of hard bone.

Most eagle rays live in the open ocean. They do not stay on the sea bottom like other rays. They have wide, flat bodies shaped like a diamond. They also have very long tails. Some rays can grow to be huge. Their wingspan can reach 7 meters.

These fish have a unique way of eating. They like to eat mollusks and crustaceans. These animals have hard shells. Eagle rays have very flat teeth. They use these teeth to crush the shells.

They are also wonderful swimmers. They can move through the water with ease. Some rays can even breach the surface. They leap several meters into the air. This makes them very exciting to watch.

Scientists have studied these rays for a long time. Many people have helped name them. For example, Linnaeus named the common eagle ray in 1758. Other scientists like Garman and Gill also found species. William Toby White wrote about how they are grouped. In 2014, White used three main groups. These were Aetobatus, Aetomylaeus, and Myliobatis. A paper from 2016 changed things. It placed Aetobatus into its own family called Aetobatidae.

There are many different kinds of eagle rays. The genus Aetomylaeus has many species. One is the spotted eagle ray named in 1790. Another is the bull ray named in 1817. The genus Myliobatis also has many members. The bat eagle ray lives in the Pacific Ocean. The common eagle ray lives in the Mediterranean Sea. Some rays live in shallow water near sandy beaches. Other rays live in very deep water.

Eagle rays have interesting ways of having babies. They are ovoviviparous. This means the mother gives birth to live young. A mother can have up to six babies at once.

Some rays have tails that look like whips. These tails can have a stinger. When they swim near the coast, they look amazing. Their wings sometimes break the surface of the water. It can look like two sharks are swimming together. This is a sight you would not want to miss.
