Platax are a group of fish. Most people call them batfish.

Their name comes from a Greek word. That word means "flat." This is because they have very flat bodies.

Adults have a disc shape. They have large fins on the top and bottom. These fins make them look like a triangle.

These fish live in the Indo-Pacific. This is a large part of the ocean. They live from the Red Sea to Australia. Many stay near coral reefs or old shipwrecks.

It is very important for them to live in salty water. This helps them grow and stay healthy.

There are five known species alive today. One is the longfin batfish. Another is the dusky batfish.

The longfin batfish is the largest of the group. Scientists also found fossils of four old species. These were fish that lived a long time ago. One was named Platax altissimus.
