life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The guitarfish is a very special fish. It looks like a mix between a shark and a ray. Its body is long and flat. The head is shaped like a guitar.

These fish live in warm waters around the world. They like to stay near the coast. Many live in mud or sand. They bury themselves to hide. They are bottom feeders. This means they eat things on the ocean floor. They eat worms, clams, and crabs.

Guitarfish belong to a group called cartilaginous fishes. This means their bodies are made of cartilage instead of bone. This group is very old. Some fossils of these fish are from a long time ago.

Baby guitarfish grow in a special way. They are ovoviviparous. This means the embryo grows inside an egg inside the mother. The egg hatches when the baby is ready.

Some guitarfish are in trouble. People catch them for their parts. This is a big threat to them. One type, the Brazilian guitarfish, is critically endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing forever.
