Whiptail stingray

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Whiptail stingrays are a big family of rays. They live in warm oceans all over the world. Some even live in fresh water rivers. These rays have flat bodies. Their shapes look like ovals or diamonds.

Their long tails look like whips. Most rays have a sharp stinger near the tail. They use it for defense. The stinger is pointy and has jagged edges. When they sting, they jerk their tails. This can leave the stinger in a wound.

These rays live on the bottom of the water. This way of life is called demersal. They like to hide in sand or mud. They might even hide near coral reefs. They often bury themselves to stay safe from sharks.

Whiptail rays have a special way to find food. They use electroreception. This means they can feel weak electric fields. They have tiny pores on their skin. These pores are part of organs called ampullae of Lorenzini. These organs help them find prey like fish or crabs.
