The sand tiger shark is a fascinating predator found in many oceans.

It lives in both warm and cool waters near coasts and reefs. These sharks are often seen on the continental shelf. This is the area where the shallow ocean floor drops off. They inhabit places like Japan, Australia, and South Africa. They also live along the coasts of the Americas. Even though they look scary, they are mostly slow and calm. They have not been known to kill any humans.

This shark has a very special way it works to stay afloat. It is the only shark known to gulp air at the surface. The shark stores this air inside its stomach. This creates near-neutral buoyancy, which means the shark can float easily. This trick helps the shark stay still and quiet in the water. Being able to hover helps them hunt without being noticed.

They use a quick sideways snap to grab their prey. Their diet includes bony fish, squid, crabs, and even other sharks.

Scientists have spent a long time figuring out the shark's name. A man named Constantine Rafinesque first described it as Carcharias taurus. This name means "bull shark." Many experts disagreed about the name for many years. Some thought it should be called Odontaspis taurus. Others tried the name Eugomphodus taurus in 1977. Finally, experts agreed on the current name, Carcharias taurus. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature approved this name.

Sand tigers have many different physical traits. Most adults grow to be about 2.2 to 2.5 meters long. They have a pointy head and a thick, bulky body. Their skin is grey with reddish-brown spots on their backs. Their teeth are very unique because they are smooth and sharp. They have three rows of these teeth that stick out.

Some sharks are even born white, which is called being an albino. One such shark was seen in Australia in 2007.

These sharks are part of a much larger world of ocean life. Some sand tigers go on huge trips called migrations. In South Africa, they may swim over 1,000 kilometers every year. They move to different waters to find the right temperature for their babies.

They also use different parts of the ocean to hide or hunt. While they hunt at night, they hide in caves during the day. Sadly, these sharks are now critically endangered. This means they are at high risk of disappearing from the wild.
