life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Culcita are a special kind of sea star. They live in warm, tropical waters. You can find them on coral reefs. Some people even keep them in home tanks.

These stars do not look like most stars. They are plump and shaped like pillows. They are almost shaped like a five-sided star. Their five arms are very short. The arms look rounded or blunt. These sea stars can grow up to 30 cm wide. They eat coral and small animals on the sea floor.

There are three types of Culcita. One type lives in the Red Sea. This one is called Culcita coriacea. Another type lives in the Indian Ocean. This type is Culcita schmideliana. It has large tubercles, which are small bumps. The last type lives in the Pacific Ocean. It is called Culcita novaeguineae. Young sea stars are flat. They look like small biscuits.
