Sea anemone

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sea anemones are colorful marine animals that live in the ocean.

They belong to a group called cnidarians, which includes jellyfish and corals. While jellyfish swim through the water, sea anemones usually stay in one place. Most attach themselves to hard surfaces using a sticky base called a pedal disc.

Some species live in soft sand or even float near the water's surface. They are named after the anemone flower because they look so similar.

They are important parts of the ocean ecosystem.

A sea anemone has a body shaped like a tube or column. This column is topped by an oral disc with a central mouth. A ring of tentacles surrounds the mouth to catch food.

These tentacles are filled with tiny stinging cells called cnidocytes. Inside these cells are small structures called nematocysts. When something touches a sensory hair, the cell explodes. This launches a tiny harpoon that injects venom into the prey. This venom helps paralyze small fish or crustaceans so the anemone can eat them.

Sea anemones have interesting ways to make new life. They can reproduce sexually by releasing eggs and sperm into the sea. These become tiny larvae called planula that drift in the water.

After drifting, they settle on the seabed to grow into young polyps. They can also reproduce asexually through a process called fission. This happens when an anemone breaks into smaller pieces. Each piece can then grow back into a whole new animal. Some even grow new individuals from their base through pedal laceration.

There are many different sizes and types of sea anemones. Most are small, but some can grow very large. The species Stichodactyla mertensii can grow wider than 30 centimeters. The species Metridium farcimen can reach a length of one meter.

Some species, like Actinodendron arboreum, are highly toxic to humans. Most are harmless, but a few can cause severe injuries. Some anemones even have special parts called acontia to defend themselves. These are thin filaments covered in stinging cells that they can eject.

Many animals have learned to live alongside sea anemones. A famous example is the clownfish.

Clownfish are not hurt by the stinging tentacles. They use the anemone as a safe place to hide from predators. Other animals, like hermit crabs, also live with them for mutual benefit. This kind of helpful relationship is called a symbiotic relationship. It shows how different living things can work together to survive in the sea.
