These animals belong to a group called cnidarians. This group includes jellyfish and corals.

Most sea anemones stay in one place. They use a foot called a pedal disc to stick to rocks.

Their bodies are shaped like a tube. A ring of arms called tentacles sits on top. These tentacles have tiny stinging cells. We call these cells cnidocytes.

When something touches a tentacle, the cell shoots out a tiny harpoon. This harpoon gives off venom to catch food.

Some animals live with them. Clownfish are not hurt by the sting. They hide in the tentacles to stay safe from predators.

Sea anemones can make new life in two ways. They can release eggs and sperm into the sea. The eggs grow into tiny larvae. These larvae drift in the water before settling on the seabed. Anemones can also grow from pieces. If an anemone breaks in half, each part can grow into a new animal.
