This group has over 11,000 species. You might know them as jellyfish, corals, or sea anemones. Some live in the salty sea. Others live in fresh water.

Most cnidarians have two main body forms. Some are polyps. Polyps stay in one place. Others are medusae. Medusae swim through the water.

These animals have a jelly-like middle layer. We call this mesoglea.

Cnidarians are famous for their stinging cells. We call these cnidocytes.

These cells work like tiny harpoons. They shoot out to catch prey. This helps them eat small animals or plankton.

These animals are very old. Scientists have found their fossils in rocks.

Some fossils show corals lived millions of years ago. They do not have a brain. Instead, they have a nerve net. This is a simple web of nerves. It helps them sense the world around them.
