A polyp is a tiny sea animal.

Its body looks like a small tube or sac. This body has two layers of cells. The outer layer is called the ectoderm. The inner layer is called the endoderm. A jelly-like substance sits between these layers. We call this substance mesoglea.

At the top of the body is a mouth. A circle of tentacles surrounds the mouth.

These tentacles help the polyp feel and catch food. They have tiny stinging cells called nematocysts. These cells can sting and catch small prey. Some prey include tiny fish larvae.

Many polyps live in large groups called colonies.

Some colonies, like stony corals, build hard skeletons. Polyps can also make new polyps through budding. This is a way to make more of themselves without a mate. Some polyps can also make eggs and sperm. This helps them make new baby larvae. These larvae swim through the water. They eventually settle down to grow into new polyps.
