This group includes starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. There are about 7,600 living species. They live on the sea floor at every depth. Some live in shallow water. Others live in the very deep, dark ocean.

Most adult echinoderms have a special shape. They have five parts around a center. This is called radial symmetry.

When they are babies, they look different. They have a left and right side. As they grow, they change into their star shape.

These animals use water to move and eat. They have a water vascular system. This is a set of tubes filled with fluid.

The fluid moves through tiny tube feet. These feet help them walk or grab food. Many echinoderms can also grow back lost parts. A starfish can regrow a whole arm.
