life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Brittle stars live in the ocean. They are close relatives of starfish. Most brittle stars have five long, thin arms. These arms look like whips. They can grow up to 60 cm long.

These animals move in a special way. They use their flexible arms to crawl. They can move with quick, jerky motions. This helps them move across the sea floor.

A brittle star has a central body disk. This disk holds all its internal organs. Unlike starfish, the organs do not go into the arms. The disk also has a mouth on the bottom. It has five jaws made of hard plates.

Brittle stars are often scavengers. They eat small bits of food from the water. Some eat tiny worms or crabs. They use tiny tube feet to move food to their mouths.

If a predator grabs an arm, the star can let it go. The brittle star can then grow a new arm. This helps them stay safe in the wild.
