Basket star

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Basket stars are special sea animals. They belong to a group called brittle stars. Some brittle stars have long, curling arms. We call those snake stars. But basket stars have arms that branch out. These arms look like a basket.

Many of these stars live in deep, cold water. Some live in warm reefs at night. Young basket stars often live on coral.

Basket stars do not have blood. They use a water vascular system to breathe. This is a way to move water through their bodies. They can live for up to 35 years in the wild. Some can grow very big. One kind, called Gorgonocephalus stimpsoni, is quite large. Its arms can reach 70 cm long. Its center disk is 14 cm wide.
