Their shells are shaped like cones. Many shells have bright colors and patterns. There are over 800 known species of these snails. They can be small or very big. Some grow to be 21.6 cm long.

These snails are hunters. They eat worms, small fish, and other snails. To hunt, they use a special tool. This tool is a tooth called a radula.

The snail has a venom gland. This gland holds a liquid called venom. The snail sends a long tube called a proboscis toward its prey. It then fires the tooth like a tiny harpoon. The tooth is hollow and has barbs. It carries the venom into the prey to stop it from moving.

Some large cone snails can sting humans. Their sting can be very serious or even fatal. Some people call them "cigarette snails." This is because a person might only have time to smoke a cigarette before they die.

Scientists study the venom. It has many parts called conopeptides. These parts might help make new medicines. One part is used to treat very bad pain.
