These snakes have special teeth called fangs. The fangs are at the front of the mouth. They are long and hollow. This helps the snake inject venom. Some snakes can even spray venom from their fangs. This is called spitting.

Elapids live in many warm places. Some live on land in Asia, Africa, or America. Others live in the ocean. These are called sea snakes. Sea snakes have tails like paddles to help them swim. They can even breathe through their skin to stay underwater longer.

These snakes come in many sizes. Some are very small. Others are very big. The king cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world. It can grow to be very long.

Many elapids show warning signs. Cobras can lift their bodies and spread a neck flap called a hood. They may also hiss. These signs tell other animals to stay away.
