There are many kinds of these snakes. One big study says there are 38 species.

Most cobras have slender bodies. They can change how they look to stay safe. They lift their front parts off the ground. They also flatten their necks to look big. This helps scare away predators.

Some cobras are called spitting cobras. They have a special way to use venom. Their fangs have small holes in the front. This lets them squirt venom out of their mouths.

They do this to defend themselves. The venom can hurt eyes very badly.

All cobras have venom that can be fatal to humans. Many have neurotoxic venom. This type attacks the nervous system. It can cause paralysis, which means a body cannot move. The Caspian cobra is the most venomous species.
