Cobra

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Many snakes are called cobras. Most of them belong to a group called Naja. These snakes can lift their heads up. They make a hood when they feel scared.

Some other snakes use the name cobra too. The king cobra is one of them. There are also tree cobras. These live in trees. Some are called Goldie's tree cobra. Others are called black tree cobras.

Not all cobras make a hood. The black desert cobras do not. They stay low to the ground. The eastern coral snake also does not make a hood. The rinkhals is a snake with a neck band. It can make a hood when it is scared.

There is a snake called the false water cobra. It is not in the same family as other cobras. It does not make a big hood. It only flattens its neck a little bit. This snake is only mildly venomous. This means its venom is not very strong.
