They belong to a family called Muricidae. This family includes both small and large predatory snails. There are over 1,700 living species found in our oceans today. Scientists have also found 1,200 fossil species from the past. These snails make up almost 10% of a larger group called Neogastropoda. They are often called murex snails or rock snails.

These snails have very interesting ways of growing.

Many muricids use what is called episodic growth. This means their shells grow in sudden spurts. The snail stays the same size for a while. During this time, it builds a thick ridge called a varix. Then, the snail grows very fast to the next size. This process creates the many ridges seen on their shells.

Most muricid snails are active hunters in the sea.

They like to eat other snails, clams, and barnacles. To eat, they must get past a hard shell. The snail uses a liquid to soften the prey's shell. Then, it uses a scraping tool called a radula. This tool helps the snail drill a hole through the shell. Once the hole is made, the snail can reach the soft parts inside.

These snails have a very long history on Earth.

The family first appears in fossils from the Cretaceous period. Specifically, they appear during the Aptian age. Long ago, people in the Mediterranean used these snails too. The Phoenicians may have been the first to harvest them. They used the snails to make a special purple dye. This dye was called Tyrian purple or royal purple. It was a very expensive color to make.

Today, we can see many different types of muricid shells.

Their shells have many shapes, like spines or blades. Some shells even have bumps called tubercles. Collectors and designers often find these shells very beautiful. Some species can even be pests to farmers. This happens when they eat clams in farmed areas. You might see their egg capsules in a tidepool.
